Contemplating
Emily, the fifteen-minute film, is a poetic treatment of
a feature length screenplay of the same name that tells the
East-meets-West love story of a young Taiwanese poet and her
New York City English teacher. The story is a romantic comedy
- Kissing Jessica Stein meets Lost in Translation
dashed with Brokeback Mountain. It explores the complexities
of discovering lesbian love the world over.
In the short film,
scenes from the feature script were shot on 16mm. They were
then artificially book-ended with digitally shot scenes not
from the feature designed to give the highlighted material some
structure. While the short helps to introduce the principal
characters, storyline and nature of the screenplay, it only
lightly touches on the potential grandeur of the piece.
